Shah Rukh Khan's Dunki Targets 3 Idiots Record on 20th Day
On its 20th day at the box office, 'Dunki', the third release of the year featuring Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, continues to generate daily earnings in the vicinity of Rs 1 crore. The comedy-drama is approaching the conclusion of its theatrical run, with industry tracker Sacnilk reporting a net collection of Rs 1.3 crore.
Director Rajkumar Hirani’s film appears to have lost all steam after the holiday season bump. The film’s domestic total now stands at Rs 219.27 crore, which is around a third of what Shah Rukh’s Jawan earned last year, and less than half of what Pathaan made a year ago. The film had grossed Rs 447.70 crore worldwide according to official figures by Red Chillies Entertainment. Both Jawan and Pathaan grossed more than Rs 1000 crore globally.
Once 'Dunki' surpasses the Rs 450 crore milestone in India, its next target is to surpass the record set by another Hirani film, '3 Idiots'. Released in 2009 and starring Aamir Khan, '3 Idiots' had a remarkable global gross of Rs 460 crore. While 'Dunki' is expected to exceed the performance of '3 Idiots', it is projected to fall short of Rajkumar Hirani's last directorial venture, 'Sanju'. The 2018 film featuring Ranbir Kapoor garnered a worldwide box office collection of Rs 588 crore.
Internationally, 'Dunki' is poised to pursue the box office earnings achieved by 'Tiger 3', headlined by Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, which amassed Rs 464 crore in the previous year. Nevertheless, this figure remains underwhelming, particularly considering the remarkable surge in the box office numbers throughout 2023, a trend partly attributed to Shah Rukh Khan's own contributions.
Apart from 'Jawan' and 'Pathaan', 'Gadar 2' and 'Animal' achieved box office earnings of Rs 686 crore and Rs 900 crore, respectively. Despite facing competition from 'Salaar' and receiving a moderate audience response, 'Dunki' has successfully garnered Rs 450 crore. The film's performance, although commendable, fell short of the initially lofty expectations, especially given that it was helmed by director Rajkumar Hirani.
